Stanley's Story

Married to Caroline Brooks McCall (July 25, 1970). who I met at Rehoboth Beach, Delaware on June 21, 1969, which is her parents anniversary. Her father, Winston Bush McCall, was Bear Bryant's (Alabama) attorney and he won the lawsuit against the Saturday Evening Post. about the supposedly Alabama vs Georgia game. We have 3 children: Caroline (Carrie) who works for Seed to Table and lives in Naples, Fl, She got married to Thomas on Memorial Day, 2016, five years from the day they met. Allison (lives in Vestavia Hills - and does freelance advertising). She married Richard, April 28, 2012, at our beach house, the Sailfish, on Dauphin Island and they live in Vestavia Hills, AL (outside of Birmingham, AL and about 20 minutes from us. Our son, Jonathan, a registered architect in New York City married Beth, who is from Bronxville, NY, July 7, 2012 on Cape Cod. They live now in Mt. Vernon (Fleetwood), NY. just outside of Bronxville, NY, and before that they lived in Manhattan, NYC. We became grandparents for the first time. Beth and Jonathan, have a son, Charles (Charlie) Thomas Graves, who was born August 30, 2017. My first name is Charles and I have an Uncle Charlie. The Thomas goes back to Captain Thomas Graves, who was one of the original settlers of Jamestown, Virginia, and was in the first House of Burgess in 1619.. Charlie was born on August 30th, which is my youngest sister, Bonnie’s birthday. She unfortunately died in 1999 from breast cancer. I know she would be extremely happy to know that Charlie was born on her birthday. On April 7, 2018, Charlie was baptized at St. Luke's Episcopal Church where we were married and Jonathan, Carrie and Allison were baptized. Since April 8th is my 75th birthday, we also celebrated my birthday, too. Carrie, Allison and Jonathan presented me with a memorial book of pictures of my childhood years which included my mother and father, baseball years at Maryland an Anacostia football picture of me, my white Mustang, our wedding, our family, my brother and sisters, my playing Santa Claus, our children's weddings, and an assortment of pictures from over the years. What a great weekend with Charlie's baptism and my birthday.. On Saturday, July 25, 2020, we celebrated our 50th Anniversary. As a result of the Coronavirus Pandemic, Carrie, Allsion and Jonathan arranged for a Zoom conference with friends and some who were in the wedding to celebrate our 50th Anniversary. Allison arranged decorations at our house including a large size picture of us coming out of St. Luke's Episcopal Church after the wedding. We did celebrate with dinner at Vino, a restaurant in English Village but it had to be outside and using To Go Boxes for plates. We live in Mountain Brook, Alabama (a suburb on the Southeast side of Birmingham). After initially living in Laurel, Maryland, we moved to Alabama in 1972. My work career, after graduating from the University of Maryland I went to work for Koppers Company (Baltimore) as a manufacturing engineer. My work experience also included working for the Univ. of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) as a Corporate Development Officer raising money for the University and especially for a...Expand for more
Nutrition Science Center and a Kidney Center; Sales, with IBM Office Products Division (Office Products no longer exists), I retired from AT&T after 26 1/2 yrs in May 2008, which was formerly BellSouth and before that South Central Bell.. My responsibilities, included sales and then product and project managements with my last position in Compliance.. All years except South Central Bell occurred after the breakup of AT&T. Since the breakup, much has happened in telecommunications; development of PC's, I-phones, etc. and now BellSouth is AT&T. A varied career but a lot has been learned from it all. Baseball has been an important part of my life. Being on Washington Gaslight's American Legion Team for three years: we won three championships - the last year (1961), Tommy Thayer, Dick Absher, Bobby Hinton, and Jimmy Jenkins were on the Gaslight's team that year. In 1962, I was selected as an addition on Federal Storage's AAABA championship team that played in Johnstown, PA. And of course at Anacostia: we won the Inter-high East Championship in 1961, but lost to Coolidge in the Old Griffith Stadium 2-1. Football was also important. In my senior year, Matt Kirschbaum was honored being selected an Inter-high East Division back, while David Adkins and I were selected honorable mention Inter-high East. My senior year was a great year from September through June; football through baseball and the championship and the senior prom with a great and very pretty date, Dianne Carter. Full of great memories and friends. After Anacostia, I went to Maryland and played baseball. Lettered 3 years and played on Maryland's first Atlantic Coast Championship team in 1965. My education included a Bachelors degree from Maryland, an MBA from Samford University in Birmingham, and a Masters' Certificate in Project Management from George Washington University. My Social Fraternity at Maryland was Sigma Chi and I am a "Life Member of Sigma Chi"; Member of Newcomen Society; Life Member of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce; Genealogy and Scottish heritage has been important to me. My sister Bonnie traced our heritage back to Jamestown. I have been President of the St. Andrew's Society of the Middle South (see my picture); on the Board of Directors of Scottish Heritage, USA and the Board of Directors of the National Trust of Scotland, USA. Also Governor (President) of the Society of Colonial Wars in Alabama which is based my heritage going back to Jamestown and the Colonial Wars. Other activities have included being on the Board of Directors of the Dauphin Island Property Owners Association and Board of Directors of another Home Owners Association. I belong to the Country Club of Birmingham and a golf group the Chiselers, that was started in 1971 and who I have been a member and played together since 1972. Just wish I could translate the baseball swing to a good golf swing. I have been very fortunate with friends, family and great memories. Anacostia was a great experience for me and I continue to have an enjoyable friendship and contacts. Our 57th reunion in June 2018 was a special time that included class members from 1959, 1960, 1961, and 1962.
